What Paid Media Actually Means
Paid media is any marketing channel where you pay to reach an audience. This includes search ads, social ads, display advertising, sponsored content, and programmatic campaigns.
Performance marketing is paid media with accountability built in, you track what happens after someone sees or clicks your ad, and you optimise based on results rather than reach.
For charities, this combination is powerful: instead of spending money and hoping for impact, you spend money, measure the impact, and spend more on what works.
Why Charities Need to Understand Paid Media
Organic reach, the free attention you earn through social media, SEO, and word of mouth, is valuable but unpredictable. It grows slowly and can be disrupted by algorithm changes overnight.
Paid media gives you control. You decide who sees your message, when, on which platform, and with what creative. You can scale what works and stop what does not, immediately.
For charities running time-sensitive campaigns (a fundraising deadline, an emergency appeal, an event), paid media is often the only way to guarantee reaching enough people quickly enough to matter.
The Paid Media Channels Available to Charities
Search (PPC): Ads that appear when someone searches for a relevant term on Google or Bing. High intent — the person is already looking for something related to your work.
Paid social: Ads on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, and similar platforms. Strong targeting capabilities, effective for both awareness and direct response.
Display advertising: Banner and image ads shown across websites and apps. Broad reach at low cost, best for awareness and retargeting.
Programmatic: Automated buying of ad space across thousands of sites and platforms, using data to show your ads to the right people at the right moment.
Paid partnerships and sponsorships: Paying to be featured in another organisation's newsletter, podcast, or content.
Performance Marketing: The Mindset Shift
Performance marketing starts with a clear objective and works backwards. Before spending a penny, you define:
What action do I want someone to take? (Donate, sign up, attend, share)
What is that action worth to my charity?
What is the maximum I am willing to pay to generate it?
Everything, creative, targeting, channel choice, budget, is then evaluated against those numbers. An ad that generates beautiful impressions but no donations is a failure. An ad that looks ugly but costs £3 per donation is a success.
The Funnel: Matching Channels to the Supporter Journey
Not every channel is suited to every stage of the supporter relationship.
Top of funnel (awareness): Display, paid social, programmatic - reaching people who have never heard of you.
Middle of funnel (consideration): Search, retargeting - reaching people who are aware and thinking about your cause.
Bottom of funnel (conversion): Email retargeting, search - reaching people who are ready to act.
The most effective paid media strategies use multiple channels together, guiding supporters from first impression to long-term relationship.
10-Minute Exercise: Map Your Paid Media Opportunity
Write down the single most important action you want more supporters to take in the next 90 days.
Then ask: which paid channel would reach the people most likely to take that action? What is the measurable result I would need to see to know it is working?
That three-part answer is the beginning of a paid media strategy.
Why is this important to know?
Charities that understand paid media and performance marketing can grow their reach, their supporter base, and their income in ways that organic channels alone cannot deliver.
The organisations that use data to drive decisions, rather than instinct or habit, consistently outperform those that do not. This lesson is the foundation for everything that follows in this section.
