Format Is a Strategic Decision

The same idea can be expressed as a blog post, a short video, an infographic, a podcast episode, a social caption, or an email. The format you choose shapes who will consume it, on which platform, and what action they will take.

Choosing a format because it is fashionable, or because it is what you have always done, means missing the audience who would have responded to something different. Format should always follow function.

Written Content

Blog posts and articles are the foundation of long-term organic reach.

They rank in search engines, they can be shared, and they position your charity as a knowledgeable authority. Best for educational content, thought leadership, and evergreen topics that remain relevant over time.

Email newsletters reach people who have already opted in to hear from you, your warmest audience.

Best for nurturing relationships, sharing updates, and driving specific actions.

Reports and whitepapers demonstrate deep expertise and are particularly valuable for funders, corporate partners, and policy audiences.

They take longer to produce but have a long shelf life and high perceived value.

Social captions are short, immediate, and conversational.

They work best as entry points, creating a moment of connection that leads people to deeper content.

Visual Content

Photography humanises your work and creates an emotional connection.

Authentic images of real people and real situations consistently outperform stock photography for charities.

Infographics make complex information easy to understand and share.

Useful for communicating statistics, processes, or comparisons in a format that can be absorbed quickly.

Short-form video (reels, TikToks, shorts) is the fastest-growing format across every platform.

High production quality is less important than authenticity, storytelling, and a strong opening in the first three seconds.

Long-form video (YouTube, Vimeo) allows deeper storytelling.

Best for impact films, explainers, and event recordings that supporters will seek out rather than stumble across.

Audio Content

Podcasts reach a loyal, attentive audience. They require consistent production but build an intimacy with listeners that other formats rarely achieve.

Particularly effective for charities with complex or nuanced causes that benefit from longer-form conversation.

Audio clips and interviews can be repurposed from podcast recordings into social content, newsletter features, or website testimonials.

Interactive Content

Quizzes and assessments generate high engagement and can be used to segment your audience based on their responses.

Surveys and polls generate data while making supporters feel heard.

Calculators: such as "what impact would a £10 monthly donation make?": make abstract giving feel concrete and personal.

Choosing the Right Format

Ask three questions before selecting a format:

  1. Where does my audience consume this type of content? (Match format to platform.)

  2. What do I want them to think, feel, or do after consuming it? (Match format to goal.)

  3. What can my team realistically produce consistently? (Match format to capacity.)

A well-produced blog post published monthly beats an inconsistent video series that trails off after three episodes.

10-Minute Exercise: Audit Your Format Mix

List every content format your charity has used in the last six months. Note which performed best: not by volume, but by the actions they drove.

Then ask: Is there a format your audience clearly responds to that you are underusing? And is there a format you keep producing that consistently underperforms?

Why is this important to know?

Charities often default to the formats their team is comfortable with rather than the formats their audience actually responds to.

Understanding the full range of options and how to match format to goal, platform, and capacity, is what separates a reactive content operation from a strategic one. The right format makes good content great. The wrong format makes great content invisible.
